What to Look for When Choosing a Mobile X-Ray Provider

A practical guide for nursing home administrators and facility directors evaluating mobile imaging services — from credentials to equipment quality.

Choosing the right mobile X-ray provider directly impacts patient care, turnaround times, and your facility's compliance posture. Here is what to evaluate.

1. Verify Credentials First

Confirm that the provider's technologists hold current ARRT certification and a valid state license. Ask for their Medicare provider number. This confirms they are enrolled with CMS and can bill Medicare directly.

HIPAA compliance is non-negotiable. Ask whether their technologists are HIPAA-trained. Ask whether the company has a documented Business Associate Agreement ready to sign.

2. Understand Their Equipment

Not all portable X-ray equipment is created equal. The key distinction is between Digital Radiography (DR) and Computed Radiography (CR) systems.

  • DR systems produce immediate digital images at the point of care. They offer lower radiation dose and higher image quality.
  • CR systems use a cassette-based workflow that requires a separate reader. This adds time and reduces image quality compared to DR.

Ask about the manufacturer and model. Leading portable X-ray manufacturers include GE Healthcare, Siemens Healthineers, Canon Medical, Fujifilm, Shimadzu, Samsung/NeuroLogica, and Carestream.

3. Published Response Times

A provider should state their typical response times for both STAT and routine requests.

  • STAT: How quickly can they arrive for an urgent exam? Top providers guarantee 2-hour STAT response.
  • Routine: What is the standard turnaround for scheduled exams?
  • Report delivery: How long after the exam until the radiologist's report is available?

4. Coverage Area Reliability

Confirm that the provider genuinely covers your ZIP code. Not just your state. Some national providers have thin coverage in certain regions.

Ask for references from facilities near you.

5. Read Reviews From Other Facilities

The most reliable signal is what other facility directors say. Look for reviews that specifically mention response time reliability, image quality, and technologist professionalism.
